What if mangroves were treated not as conservation projects, but as core financial infrastructure for coastal economies?

A private (by invitation only) dialogue session hosted by Mangrove Breakthrough.

Coastal economies in Southeast Asia face escalating climate, erosion, and livelihood risks, yet mangroves—their most effective natural defense—remain largely invisible in investment and policy decisions. This closed-door roundtable and workshop focuses on why and how mangrove value must be systematically integrated into coastal finance. The session introduces the Mangrove Transition Bond, a regional financing instrument designed to mobilize capital through bond issuance and on-lending via local financial institutions to mangrove-adjacent businesses.

By embedding mangrove performance into risk assessment, this approach reframes rice, shrimp, and other coastal commodities as mangrove-positive assets—lower risk due to reduced erosion, salinity intrusion, wave exposure, and stronger social license to operate. Local and regional banks can therefore offer improved terms, enabling communities to access capital for sustainable production. Grounded in Southeast Asian practice, the discussion brings together finance leaders, governments, and philanthropies to explore how mangrove-positive products reach markets and become the new standard for resilient coastal growth.
